BT Speak is much more than a note-taking device. It’s a flexible pocket computer designed to handle the wide variety of files you encounter every day. Whether you’re reading, editing, or sharing, BT Speak gives you the power to translate and convert documents with ease.
Which files can BT Speak handle?
Out of the box, BT Speak can open plain text, Markdown, and Braille files instantly. But it doesn’t stop there. BT Speak also supports a wide range of formats, including Microsoft Word, EPUB, HTML, PDF, RTF, reStructuredText, and Open Document files.
When you open a file that isn’t plain text, Markdown, or Braille, BT Speak automatically creates a text version in a separate folder. This means you can read and edit the content right away without worrying about compatibility.
Your Pocket File Converter
BT Speak makes it simple to switch formats. From Blazie Mode, type O-chord, then F to open the File Browser. Point to the file you want, press T, and BT Speak will ask which format you’d like. You’ll see a list of all supported formats. Choose a file, press Enter, and a new file is created in the same folder with the correct extension.
This gives you several benefits. If someone sends you a Word document, you’ll be able to easily open a text version of that document into the BT Speak’s editor. Even better, you can edit the original file using LibreOffice Writer, which can also open and save documents in a variety of file formats, including modern Word documents.
And for Braille users, it’s even better. Any text or Word document can be converted into Braille for reading on a display or embossing. Your BT Speak’s Braille table setting determines the translation (UEB, EBAE, and more).
Making Images Accessible
What if the document is an image, not text? Not a problem for BT Speak. When you open an image-based PDF (or even .bmp or .jpg files), BT Speak automatically performs Optical Character Recognition (OCR). A text or Braille version of the content is created instantly, so you can read and edit the file as if it were typed. This feature also handles .bmp or .jpg files.
Freedom to Read and Create
From Word documents to Braille files and images of text, BT Speak’s built-in tools give you the freedom to handle files in the format that works best for you. Whether you’re reading class materials, editing documents for work, or preparing Braille output, BT Speak adapts to your needs so you can focus on the content, not the file type. We hope that these built-in tools will give you the flexibility and the freedom for reading and editing files in a variety of formats.
